Come to Ōkahu Bay and give Waka Ama a go. Paddle around the Waitematā harbour and the shorelines of Auckland City, while learning about the history of the region from a Māori perspective. While on the water, your navigator will share stories about the historical events in the areas around Ōkahu Bay, and how they have changed over the years.
Waka Ama is Aotearoa’s oldest sport. Our ancestors paddled Waka Ama as a necessity, racing from coast to coast to catch their kai. Waka Ama has been handed down through generations, bringing people closer to the environment and inciting a profound respect for our oceans. Waka Ama allowed us to closely observe changes in kai abundance and coastal conditions, informing us of when to adapt our way of life. Waka Ama will continue to be handed down, educating our tamariki in health and sustainability.
